The Two Party System is “the Greatest Political Evil under our Constitution”

This election was shrouded by the “lesser of two evils” argument. “I’m going to vote for Hillary because she is the better option than the racist and misogynist, Trump.” “I’m going to vote for Trump because Hillary is evil and she cannot be trusted because of her emails and sketchy money.” “What is there to do? Both of these options are horrible….” Well there is something that you could have done; vote for another party. Our country is in this never-ending mindset of “Us versus Them” and “Red versus Blue”. This is exactly not the way our country was ever intended to be.

John Adams said, “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.” A founding father said this! Whatever the reason may be (media, the elite, stupidity, ignorance) our country is now near its breaking point. We have completely and fully started the process of complete division. The two-party system, which is “the greatest political evil under our Constitution” has assumed full control and it must be dismantled before all is too late.

There are many other parties and candidates that a lot of people would relate to rather than the Democratic or Republican party: Gary Johnson, Evan McMullin, Jill Stein. People should vote for who most aligns with their values, not for the “lesser of two evils.” Voting for the “lesser of two evils” is the true waste of your vote. Any one of these candidates had a shot at winning, but they were shrouded by the media having a heyday about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and the corruption of the election process. Some may ask why there were only two parties in the debates? That is because the two-party system has assumed full control over our political climate. The best way that they have done this is through the Commission on Presidential Debates.

The Commission on Presidential Debates is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) corporation whose primary purpose is “to sponsor and produce debates for the United States presidential and vice presidential candidates and to undertake research and educational activities relating to the debates.” Why weren’t any of the other candidates I mentioned in the “nonpartisan” debates? Well, there is a 15% polling threshold to be included in the debates. “Nonpartisan” my ass. Nonpartisan is defined as “free from party affiliation, bias, or designation”. Well, Commission on Presidential Debates, you seem pretty biased towards the Democrats and Republicans. Essentially, the Commission on Presidential Debates is the two-party system assuming full control over the citizens of the United States of America.

There is still hope, though. The Commission on Presidential Debates has been sued in the past about its mission and status, but after the election of 2016 real progress may actually happen. Multiple parties and organizations have sued the Debate Committee. There is now perhaps a chance that more parties will be allowed into the debates and us citizens will break free from the manipulation and facade of the corrupt two-party system. If we continue down this path of division, then I feel as if we will not be the United States much longer, but rather literally the divided states.
